Can you imagine cleaning the toilet in George Clooney’s house? Or grocery shopping for food to feed all of Angelina Jolie’s kids? What is it like to be a housekeeping manager for famous people and celebrities?
In the United States, there is an organization called the International Executive Housekeepers Association. The organization was founded in New York City in 1930 and provides networking and leadership opportunities, training, and resources. It has an annual trade show and convention, as well as a bi-monthly publication.
It is not by chance that the organization was founded in New York City. Many celebrities in cities, like New York and Los Angeles, live large lives and employ multiple people as staff, including housekeeping managers. It is common for an affluent household in New York City or Los Angeles to spend $300,000 to $500,000 a year on household employees. Often, celebrities and other high net worth individuals hire their staff through staffing agencies.
A housekeeping manager for a celebrity can have a salary of up to $100,000 per year or even more. Many get cash bonuses, work cars, gym memberships, trips, and college tuition reimbursed.
Housekeeping managers who work for celebrities are often called, estate managers. The estate manager is often in charge of not just housekeeping, but renovations and events. An estate manager reports either to the celebrity or a business manager of the celebrity.
While a celebrity may not have specific requirements when it comes to the education of a housekeeping manager, education in facilities management does exist. However, in Europe, celebrities and affluent individuals usually want housekeeping managers with 5-10 years of experience, while in the United States attitude plays a more important role. Some of the requests that housekeepers get from famous people and celebrities are absolutely acceptable, while others can be very strange. For example, once a male estate manager had to wear designer shoes to break them in for his female client.
Celebrity Housekeepers Tell All
Typically, an agency requires celebrity employees to sign very strict, non-disclosure agreements. This is why you can often read about celebrities and their habits in various gossip magazines, but you do not see the names of the people who have supplied the information.
Examples of such information include Taylor Swift having several cats and her home being filled with photos of cats. Apparently, Swift spends a lot of time grooming her cats to reduce the amount of hair – and hairballs.
Kristen Stewart likes to smoke and, according to her former housekeeper, smokes like chimney and leaves cigarette butts everywhere.
Jennifer Lopez pays her staff very little, yet expects them to work very hard. She had to work extremely hard to get where she is in life, which is why she expects everyone around her to do the same.
Mariah Carey’s housekeepers confess that Mariah can sometimes drink too much while at home, to the point where she becomes loopy. Several times, her staff had to do her hair and makeup while she was passed out from drinking.
Demi Moore doesn’t like to see herself in the mirror when the light is too bright, which is why she demands that her staff only use soft bulbs for lighting.
The housekeeper of Miley Cyrus confessed that Miley’s pets are not house-trained. When they make a mess, Miley yells at her housekeepers, expecting them to clean the mess very quickly.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and His Housekeeper
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s housekeeper is probably one of the most infamous celebrity housekeepers that the world knows about.
Arnold and his wife, Maria Shriver, separated after 25 years of marriage on May 9, 2011. About a week later, the Los Angeles Times reported that Schwarzenegger had an illegitimate son with his longtime housekeeper, Mildred Baena.
After the article came out, Schwarzenegger admitted fathering a child with his housekeeper. He also said that he confessed to his wife about the child and the affair. He did not disclose that he only confessed after his wife confronted him with the information.
Baena worked for Schwarzenegger and his wife for 20 years. She retired in 2011. She was pregnant with Arnold’s child at the same time Shriver was pregnant. Schwarzenegger’s son with Baena was born in 1997. His name is Joseph.
Schwarzenegger said that he only learned that the child was his when the boy was seven years old because the boy looked a lot like him.
Schwarzenegger took financial responsibility for the child, right after learning that the boy was his and continued to provide support for many years.
According to a report by KNX 1070 radio, Schwarzenegger bought a four-bedroom house for his housekeeper and their son in 2010. Baena separated from her husband several months after her son was born. She filed for divorce in 2008. Baena’s husband said that she falsified the birth certificate of her child with Schwarzenegger. Baena did her first public interview about the scandal on June 14, 2011, with Hello! Magazine. She did the interview for free.
